ASK THE EXPERTS :: BAGS Katherine Hannaford, editor of thebaglady.tv
Everything you need to know, but were afraid to ask!!
You asked us and we found you an expert! Handbag expert, Katherine Hannaford is the Bag Lady and we caught up with her for the low down on arm candy!
WCW: What is the IT bag right now? Katherine: Balenciaga's quilted
Motorcycle Matelassé, it's been seen
on Lindsay Lohan, and Ashlee Simpson, otherwise Mulberry's 'Emmy, Kate Moss
and a bunch of other celebs have been seen with it. This is always a
controversial issue, as there's just so many to choose from! Another
great bag which is being touted as an 'It' bag this fall, is Jimmy
Choo's 'Ramona', which combines black patent leather with with smart
silver hardware.
WCW: What is your dream bag? Katherine: My dream bags tend to change from week to week, but right now I'm
salivating over Vivienne Westwood's tartan bags, and the Korean
designer, Stori Sac's, latest collection. Ideally I'd love a Hermés
Birkin, who doesn't want the most expensive, and sought after, handbag
ever sold? If I got given one, I'd probably sell it though, so I can
buy four or five other designer bags instead!
WCW: What makes a bag drool-worthy? Katherine: It' bags tend to be given this accolade (sadly), by how many celebs
have been spotted with it, and celebs love anything with bling on it,
hence why Chloe's 'Paddington' or Marc Jacobs' 'Stam' were 'It' bags.
Anything that separates it from the pack, something which is instantly
recognisable, and usually in a neutral colour like brown or black, for
a timeless, versatile appeal. Little recognisable trademarks, like the
buckle of Fendi's 'B' bag, or the padlock on Chloe's 'Paddington', tend
to be the clincher on bags, high street (or mall) shops love to make
inspired bags using these trademarks, making designer creations
affordable for those of us who don't earn an A-List wage!
WCW: What trends should we watch for? Katherine: For Fall, the key trends are tartan, patent, hardware, velvet, and frame (doctor) bags. Clutches are still very! popular , and Bottega Veneta have made this season's best clutches, with their hard silk cases, in my opinion. Next Spring/Summer, metallic seems to be huge, judging by Marc Jacobs' and all the other designers' collections at the recent fashion week shows.
WCW: Which celebrity has the best bags? Katherine: Kate Moss always carries the hottest designer bags, with her numerous snakeskin Chloe 'Betty's, Mulberry 'Bayswater's, and Luella 'Gisele's. Otherwise, I love Reese Witherspoon's understated style, classic Marc Jacobs arm candy, very grown-up chic in nice, neutral colours. Lindsay Lohan is always seen with the latest must-have bags, whether they be YSL's 'Muse', Chanel 2.55's, or Fendi 'B' bags, although she is notorious for not taking good care of them.
WCW: What colors and sizes are hot? Katherine: The ideal size for a handbag is 14" long, which is the standard size for handbags these days. Obviously the big bags, like YSL's 'Muse', are extremely popular, as these days us women tend to tote around a lot of junk wherever we go! For eveningwear, a clutch is a must, these can be any size really, although obviously bigger is better. A hot colour for bags this season is raspberry, which contrasts brilliantly with this season's grey clothes, and matches the lipstick we're all slathering on our faces! Red is always a great colour for bags, and tends to be extremely timeless, although obviously black and brown are the safer colours to choose. The only colour I would be hesitant to buy would be white, as bags can get very dirty easily, and as we all know, white leather is a pain to clean.
